CHICAGO - Its been nearly a month since the Raptors surrendered a 27-point lead - their largest collapse in franchise history - in an embarrassing road loss to the Warriors, a loss that surprised nobody. As the schedule flipped from November to December, they would go on to drop five straight, falling six games below the .500 mark before a franchise-altering trade turned them into an unrecognizable team. Now, the Raptors - winners of three straight for the first time this season and eight of their last 11 - are finding ways to win, rather than finding creative and increasingly frustrating ways to lose. The fourth-quarter comeback is becoming something of a nightly tradition, defying everything we thought we knew about the long-suffering franchise. A lot can change in a few weeks and for the Raptors, everything has. "Now when we face adversity we dont get down," said DeMar DeRozan moments after he and his teammates engineered the fourth-quarter comeback that sealed an 85-79 victory in Chicago on New Years Eve. "Before, a lot of the times we would make excuses if something didnt go our way and wed get frustrated. Now everyone just stays level." That level of confidence and self-belief is evident whenever this team has found themselves staring down any late-game adversity, and theyve encountered their fair share of it over the past month. A year ago, the Raptors won three games in which they trailed going into the fourth quarter. This season theyve already won five such contests, four in the last six games, all of them coming on the road. After scoring just 57 points, shooting 37 per cent through three quarter and trailing Chicago by as many as nine, Toronto bested the Bulls 28-17 in the fourth while holding them to 4-of-26 from the field. Naturally its been a wild ride for Dwane Casey, who has been proud of his teams resiliency but hopes this is not a trend theyll be relying on in the New Year. "You have to meet their force with force, if youre serious about winning," said the Raptors coach Tuesday evening. "We did that and we have to continue to do that and Im not going to let up, Im not going to relent from that because thats who we are, its who weve got to be." "I know, to win in this league you have to be a physical, bad-behind team." Calm, cool and collected, the Raptors quickly turned the tables in the fourth. For the first time all night they controlled the tempo and owned the paint, bodying up with the physical Bulls frontline. Again, nobody panicked and again, they owe a lot of that newfound resilient to their newest teammates. Reserves Greivis Vasquez, Patrick Patterson and John Salmons - all three acquired from Sacramento in the Rudy Gay trade earlier this month - began the final period on the floor alongside starters DeMar DeRozan and Jonas Valanciunas. The three newcomers totaled just eight points in the first 36 minutes - the Bulls bench outscoring Torontos reserves 31-12 at the time - but combined to score 19 in the fourth. Vasquez ran the show for the first eight minutes of the quarter before Kyle Lowry finished the game, Patterson had eight points and clamped down on Taj Gibson, while Salmons was rock solid on both ends as usual. All three were crucial to the comeback, one that ignited the teams bench and had every Raptor on their feet supporting their teammates. "Honestly, those guys who started the fourth quarter… those guys won that game for us," said Kyle Lowry, who added 13 points and six minutes himself. "I tip my hat to them." "I think the guys in this locker room believe," he continued. "We believe in each other, we believe in what were trying to do. I think we know we have a chance to do some things and we can take care of business when times are tough. Were showing the team camaraderie and spirit that we have, were all happy for each other." The Raptors players are high on confidence, feeling good about themselves sitting atop a struggling division and closing in on a .500 record as they welcome in 2014. Still, theyre living proof that things, in this league can change in heartbeat. Having already navigated through the toughest early-season schedule of any team in the Eastern Conference, according to Basketball-Reference.com, the month that lays ahead presents yet another challenge. Toronto will play 17 games in 31 days to begin the New Year. Apart from a three-game trip and a three-game home stand at the outset, theyll alternate home and road contests for the remainder of January with two days in between outings only once. In just a couple weeks they have become a feel-good team in the disappointing Eastern Conference but all the progress theyve made can be undone just as quickly as they face a daunting stretch with a couple of games against the Pacers, a visit to Miami and a meeting with the red-hot Wizards. The final month of 2013 has been kind to them but their resolution is simple; stay hungry in 2014. Cheap Asics Shoes Online Australia . James Harden wasnt worried and told his coach as much. "He was fired up but I told him: Its OK. Were going to be all right," Harden said. And they were. Houston scored 17 straight points after that timeout, led by 10 from Harden, to take the lead and roll to an easy 129-106 win. Discount Asics Shoes Australia . BOSTON -- Buck Showalters bullpen had been depleted and Baltimores five-run lead had disappeared. Then, as they started their 30th inning in a 30-hour span, the AL East-leading Orioles pulled out another victory. "Thats the kind of game that the good teams win," Showalter said after the Orioles beat Boston 7-6 in 12 innings Sunday. "Its so easy to say, Boy, it wasnt meant to be today, instead of making it happen." A day after a day-night doubleheader that already taxed his pitching staff, Showalter watched his bullpen give up five runs in the seventh to force extra innings. In the 12th, David Lough hit a leadoff triple and scored on J.J. Hardys single to give Baltimore its sixth win in seven games. "A leadoff triple like that, especially in the 12th inning, its good to see," said Brad Brach, who earned the victory with three innings of scoreless relief. "I was definitely relieved." Brach (4-0) allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four, and Zach Britton got the last three outs for his 14th save. Showalter said first baseman Chris Davis, who has one pitching appearance in his career, was next if the Orioles hadnt scored in the top of the 12th. "I have been out of it for like 2 1/2 hours," Orioles starter Kevin Gausman said. "Just walking around, chugging water, trying to get something going -- anything I could do to get us to score some runs." Edward Mujica (2-4) worked a scoreless 11th before Lough lined a triple to the centre field wall leading off the 12th. The next batter, Hardy, bounced one through the left side of the infield to give the Orioles the lead. Hardy and Nelson Cruz each had three hits for Baltimore. Cruz had five hits Saturday in the second game of a day-night doubleheader and hit safely in seven straight at-bats before flying out in the fifth. David Ortiz had four hits and Dustin Pedroia added three for Boston, which trailed 6-1 before scoring five runs in the seventh to tie it. Ortiz lined the ball to the left-field corner with one out in the 12th, but Lough threw him out trying to stretch it into a double. "He was digging hard right out of the batters box," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "The ball caroms right back to Lough and he throws a strike to second base. Im not going to fault him for an aggressive effort. He gave everything he had tryinng to stretch that base hit to a double.dddddddddddd" The Red Sox have lost five of six and fallen a season-worst 10 games below .500. Boston centre fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. had two hits, threw out a runner at the plate and made a leaping catch to end the top of the ninth. The Orioles scored in the fourth against Jake Peavy after Cruz led off with a double and scored when third baseman Xander Bogaerts fielded Delmon Youngs grounder and threw it into the stands behind first base. Young made it 2-0 in the sixth when he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and eventually scored on Caleb Josephs sacrifice fly. Boston cut it to 2-1 in the bottom half on Ortizs RBI single through the shifted infield. Baltimore scored four in the seventh on six singles and catcher David Ross error on a play at the plate. After Stephen Drew struck out to start the bottom half, Ross homered and then the next four batters singled to make it a 6-4 game. Pedroia struck out, then Brian Matusz was brought in to face Ortiz, who was 1 for 22 with 13 strikeouts in his career against the Orioles lefty. Ortiz singled to make it 6-5, then Mike Napoli singled off Tommy Hunter to tie the game before Drew struck out to end the inning. NOTES: Ortiz doubled in the fourth for his 1,708th hit in a Boston uniform. He passed Harry Hooper for seventh on the franchise list; Bobby Doerr is next with 2,042. Ortiz also had 393 hits with the Minnesota Twins. ... Bogaerts snapped an 0-for-27 slump with a third-inning single. ... Gausman was called up from Triple-A Norfolk to make the start. RHP Ramon Ramirez was designated for assignment to make room on the roster. ... Orioles RHP Bud Norris (groin) felt fine Sunday, a day after throwing a simulated game. Showalter said hes leaning toward starting Norris on Tuesday against Washington. ... Acknowledging Davis (.201) is "scuffling," Showalter gave him Sunday off. Showalter expects Davis to play Monday. ... Showalter brushed off Red Sox RHP John Lackeys comments Saturday after Cruzs five-hit game. Lackey said he had "nothing to say" about Cruz, apparently referring to his 50-game suspension a year ago for his role in the Biogenesis drug scandal. "We need to all make sure we check our own backyard before we start looking at somebody elses," Showalter said. ... Peavy has not won in 13 starts since April. ' ' '
